Does eufy require a subscription?
Short answer: No. eufy Security records to local storage (on the device or a HomeBase) with no monthly fee, and playback works from the app. Cloud backup is optional and starts at $3.99/month for one device in the US.
What works free

Local storage
Yes. Many eufy cameras record to a microSD card or built-in storage (eufy says the eufyCam S4 has 32GB built in). The HomeBase S380 ($199.99 US) has 16GB built in and takes a 2.5-inch SATA drive up to 16TB. It supports up to 8 wired devices (up to 4 recording 24/7) and 16 battery devices. eufy's NZ page says HomeBase 3 works with most eufy Security devices except eufy wired doorbells. [source]

Our verdict
eufy is one of the main no-subscription options. Video stays on the device or a HomeBase. Pay only if you want an off-site cloud copy (30-day rolling history). Check whether your model records on-device or needs a HomeBase before buying.
Alternatives that don't need a subscription
- Wyze cameras: Cheaper cameras with free microSD recording.
- Reolink: No-subscription cameras with microSD/NVR options (page coming).
- Ring video doorbells & cameras: Paid-plan comparison. Ring needs a plan to record.

FAQ
Does eufy need a subscription to record?
No. eufy cameras and doorbells record to local storage on the device or a HomeBase with no monthly fee. A cloud subscription only adds an off-site backup.
How much is eufy cloud storage?
In the US it's $3.99/mo or $39.99/yr for one device, $7.99/mo for two, $11.99/mo for three, or $13.99/mo or $139.99/yr for unlimited devices (Plus). All plans keep 30 days of history.
Do I need a eufy HomeBase?
Not always. Some models record to their own microSD or built-in storage, while others are designed around a HomeBase. Check your model's storage spec. eufy says a one- or two-camera setup that records to its own storage may not need a hub.
